In this second and final novel of the series, Bri Greene is coping with the shock and grief of knowing her adoptive mother Thandie is being held in the underworld for the next month. Bri has a chance to save her but only by setting out on a quest that Bri fears is impossible. Bri and her other adoptive mother Angie are still reeling with Thandie's death when they are forced to confront a newcomer to their home. The woman identifies herself as Circe Colchis, Bri's biological aunt. Bri had thought Circe was dead, but Circe reveals that she has been traveling the world in the company of Persephone Colchis, an immortal family member.

The Colchis family are direct descendants of the goddess Hecate through her daughter Medea. Medea's brother Absyrtus was murdered and his body hacked into six pieces. A plant known as Absyrtus Heart grew in each of the six places. The plants can be used to make one immortal. The Colchis family has guarded those plants ever since, but the cost was great. Bri's biological mother was murdered by a woman who wanted the plant that remains on the estate where Bri lives, and Bri has been attacked. Now, Bri must reunite the six pieces in order to bring Thandie back from the underworld.

Bri learns that Circe has two of the plants in her possession – one in plant form and one transformed into a rock. Bri also knows that Persephone's blood carries one of the plants and a young woman named Marie carries another. Bri has an elixir containing one of the plants. This totals five of the plants, meaning they only have to find the final piece. As they gather information and compare notes, they come to believe the missing piece is on the island of Aeaea. The problem is that no one knows the location of the island. Realizing that Medea may have used magic to hide it, they set out to find Aeaea. One of the problems is that Karter Redmond's family is also on the hunt for the missing plant. Karter's mother killed Thandie. Bri considers Karter to be complicit in Thandie's murder, but she comes to realize that Karter was caught up in the villainous life of an evil woman who cared about nothing other than attaining immortality.

Bri sets out with Circe, Marie, and Persephone to beat Karter's family to the plant. They encounter the god Hermes, who is actually Karter's ancestor. Hermes is disenchanted with life, but Bri demands his help, and he agrees. Bri's group encounters sirens and poisonous plants before having a run-in with Karter's family. Persephone and Marie are willing to sacrifice their lives to reunite the plant and bring Thandie back from the underworld. Marie is spared, though she becomes mortal. Bri decides that Karter should be left in the care of Hermes, believing this would be good for both.

As the novel comes to a close, Bri is settling into a life with Thandie, Angie, and also Circe. Bri and Circe work with plants as Circe adjusts to life without the responsibility for Absyrtus Heart. Bri's relationship with Marie advances, and Bri is happy to consider a future focusing on giving and receiving love.
