Ghiotte

By the end of the novel, the Ghiotte are an example of the dangers of letting fear take control of one’s actions. Everyone in Saverio believes that the ghiotte are evil, selfish, and stole Dea’s gift for themselves. This led to abuse, execution, and exile for many, and even Dante is not sure that there are many left. However, when it is revealed that Dea’s healing gift was the ghiotte all along, this shows the reader how the people’s fear crippled them. It is easy to turn on those they are trained to hate, but harder to see the good in people they do not understand.
