Point of View
While the novel is told in the third-person point of view, it is focused around the thoughts and actions of Alessa. This is extremely important for many of the novel’s themes, especially self-sacrifice and the focus on Alessa’s struggles with her self-esteem. By remaining in Alessa’s head, the author explores the depths of her suffering, the pain of her isolation, and the real desperation she feels trying to fulfill society’s expectations as the Finestra. This also means that the reader develops a strong emotional connection to Alessa and fully understands the pain and frustration she feels.
