Summary
In Chapter 20, Tambu tells her mother about her and Tracey’s plan for the village. Tambu’s mother is concerned that they will not be paid for their work. Tambu reassures her mother that she understands white people and knows how to interact with them. Tambu’s mother tells her not to mention this plan to her father. As they are leaving their meeting, Tambu recalls the skirt that she has brought for her mother. Her mother declines the offer and suggests that Tambu give the skirt to the Chairwoman instead. Tambu and her mother go to meet with the Chairwoman. The Chairwoman and Tambu’s mother agree that they will meet later, alone.
