Opportunity High School

It is inside the building and on the grounds of this high school in Opportunity, Alabama that almost all of the action of this novel takes place. It is a specially cordoned area outside the school that friends and family members are allowed to gather to wait for information about their students. On midnight the night of the shooting, the students gather to write the names of the deceased students and teachers on paper sky lanterns and symbolically set them free.

The Auditorium
