Summary

In Chapter 1, from 10:01-10:02 A.M., Claire is practicing with the track team on the first day of school. It is her final semester of school at Opportunity High School in Opportunity, Alabama. The practice has kept her and the other runners from attending Principal Trenton’s start of the semester speech. Claire stumbles in the cold and Chris, her best friend catches up with her to encourage her. At that moment, she believes nothing can touch them.

Because the principal along with all the other teachers and students are in the auditorium, Tomas, along with his friend Fareed, take the opportunity to look through files in the principal’s office. He intentionally got detention so that he could get into the office. They hear footsteps, but no one comes into the office and the steps move away.
