Summary

Victor recalls a memory from when he and Thomas were 15 years old. They had not been friends for years at that point. Victor became very drunk one day and, upon encountering Thomas by chance, Victor physically attacked Thomas. Fortunately, a tribe member named Norma Many horses noticed and intervened. Norma was quite strong, and she stopped Victor’s attack. Thomas was injured, but not severely. Norma asked Thomas why the other boys picked on him often. Thomas did not respond; he only wanted to go home and sleep.

The story then shifts to Victor and Thomas boarding a plane for Phoenix. They are seated next to a white woman who is doing body stretches in her seat. Thomas engages her in conversation.
