Summary

Chapter 12 begins with Blue reflecting on the quietness and slowness of her work. She walks around, admiring the nature around her. She finds a note from Red in a “pellet” that an owl excretes (93). Red talks about how Blue’s letters give her “a place to live inside” (95). She has read a book that Blue recommended to her and loved it. She also worries that she may have picked up a “shadow,” implying that someone might suspect that the two have a relationship (97).

At the start of Chapter 13, Red “wins a battle between starfleets in the far future” before “[slipping] away” by herself (98). She thinks about how she does not “seek company with others of her kind” because they are “oddballs” (98).
