Summary

Chapter 7 begins with Red watching Atlantis sink. She ruminates on how certain technologies come to be on the island, and “tries to give them time” to discover them so as not to change the course of history (48). She spies a letter, presumably from Blue, in the fire from the volcano that is destroying the island. Blue writes that she does not care much for Atlantis, just like Red. She returns Red’s correspondence about hunger.

Chapter 8 sees Blue in London on the “same day, month, year” as Red’s trip to Atlantis, but “one strand over,” a strand being a sort of parallel universe (55). She is in a teahouse and is able to read a letter from Red in her tea. In the letter, Red claims she does not “think” she feels actual hunger (60). She talks about a time when she goes to...
