Summary
Titled: "Nilda"
In this chapter, written in present tense, the reader finds a very young Yunior is just about to enter high school. His older brother, Rafa, makes friends with a girl named Nilda. Nilda comes from a broken home and goes to Yunior’s house to get away from her drunken mother. The other kids write her off as being dumb and often call her trashy. Rafa ends up getting physical with Nilda and the two begin a relationship. Yunior is opposed to it because he thinks that his brother is a monster. Rafa drops out of school and works full time at a carpet factory. He has to quit the job because his legs start to hurt. He goes to the hospital and finds out that he has cancer.
