Summary
Opening Chapter 6, Kay tells the reader that he has always been proud to say that he worked for the NHS. It has been there for everyone, “from cradle to grave” (136). He also says that knowing that he worked for the NHS “took the sting out” from many of the bad parts of the job (137). He then compares the NHS to the health system in America, saying that people should recognize that the NHS is special. His opinion about private healthcare changed once he became a registrar. While he was initially on-board with it, he realized that the private hospitals basically just take your money while not even being properly equipped. Although a doctor could make a lot more money in the private sector, Kay decides to forgo this route.
