Summary
The next chapter, “For I Have Sinned,” opens with Gaspare's backstory. He arrived in America in 1918 and worked in Sesto's shoe shop where he met Catalina. He fell in love often and remained devoted to Catalina only for while. Gaspare accompanies Frankie and Toni from the orphanage to the tiny apartment attached to his shoe shop. Frankie is so indifferent that Toni has to unpack for her. She repeatedly reads Sam's final letter. Toni and Frankie have to share a room with their stepsisters, Cora and Bernice, who make their dislike immediately apparent. Ada has already arranged Frankie an interview as a typist. Both Frankie and Pearl miss the orphanage. Pearl spends time with the angel statue, wondering about her purpose in this world, but the angel talks only of world events.
