Summary

The next section is titled 1944 – The Jezebels. The first chapter of this section is titled “The Boys of War.” Frankie bargains with God, hoping that her promises will keep Vito and Sam safe. Several of the boys who were from Guardian Angels Orphanage were killed in action and Father Paul holds a service for them. Stella, who had been writing one of the boys, cries hysterically. Frankie and some of the others laugh when one of the buglers is really a “bungler” who hits many wrong notes. When she writes to Sam about it, she writes that she believes the boys would understand.
