Summary

The next section is titled 1942 – Fairy Tales. The first chapter of this section is titled “Weak Hearts.” Frankie turns 15 and Pearl continues to wander around Chicago. She listens in on other conversations, many worried about the war. Pearl likes the library. There is a new librarian. Pearl was surprised when she said “boo” to the previous librarian, and the woman heard her. That woman retired, and Pearl says it was probably a good thing because she had a weak heart. Pearl's mother forbade her to read the things Pearl found interesting, and she now spends a lot of time reading over the shoulder of a man reading the novel The Hobbit. She notices another ghost girl hovering over the shoulder of a man reading the newspaper. The girl keeps trying to turn...
