Hương

Hương is one of the main characters of the novel. She is Công's first wife, and Tuấn and Ben's mother. After falling in love with and marrying Công, Hương believes she has found perfect happiness. Living in her home country, Vietnam, with her husband, and starting a family together, grants her a sense of contentment and peace. However, when the war starts, Hương must face the reality that her life will not remain untouched in the months and years to come.

When Tuấn is still young, and while Hương is pregnant with Ben, she and Công devise a plan to leave Vietnam for the States. At the last minute, Công fails to get on the boat with his family, and leaves Hương to raise her young sons alone in a foreign country.
