Summary
In "Ben, 2000," while in Paris, Ben met Michel. Throughout Ben's time in the city, he reflected upon Schreiber's advice. Schreiber was initially disappointed that Ben was taking time off before pursuing another degree. Finally, he encouraged Ben to "Go to Paris and be a writer" (245). The more time he spent there, however, the more lonely the city felt. He had hoped for a group of "writers and artists" who would encourage and challenge him (249). Because he had not found this, Ben ended up clinging to his relationship with Michel. He soon became involved with Michel's friends, who were all Communists. When he shared his life with them, Ben felt certain "he was doomed to be disappointed his entire life" (257). He longed for a true sense of home. He started questioning the life he had chosen.
