Summary
In "Tuấn, 1991," Tuấn joined the Southern Boyz. Though they were a gang, their leader, Quang, always called them a family. Because of Vinh, Tuấn no longer liked being at home. The Southern Boyz offered him a better sense of "camaraderie, family" (129).
The Southern Boyz "started in 1975, when the first Vietnamese refugees were just settling in the States" (129, 130). The gang was meant to protect the refugees "in their new home" (130). When Tuấn talked about the history of Southern Boyz and Vietnam, Vinh corrected him. Tuấn was convinced he knew the true stories.
For initiation, the Southern Boyz wanted Tuấn to threaten Madame Wei, the Chinese woman who owned Wei Huang Market, and vandalize her shop. Tuấn was confident he could perform the job.
Meanwhile, tensions worsened at home. Hương scolded Tuấn for disgracing his family...
