Jaywalking
Tallulah St. John jaywalks right in front of Nash during Chapter 1, and as Nash notes, this symbolizes a disregard for the law on the part of the people in the town. The people do what they want and prefer to make their own decisions regardless of the law. This is a small infraction, but it is symbolic of the town’s attitudes.
Vegetables
Vegetables symbolize quality caretaking. In the previous novel, Waylay’s mother, Tina, did not take good care of her daughter. Naomi is a good aunt/stepmother, and as such, she tries to take just as good of care of Waylay’s physical health and she does her mental and emotional health, and she primarily does this through quality nutrition.

After a panic attack, Nash puts his hurt shoulder around Lina, and this symbolizes how she helps to heal him both physically...
