Summary
Chapter 5 is told from the perspective of Nash. He has been unable to find a shelter to take Piper, the dog. He cleans up his apartment and spends a lot of money on supplies for the dog. He does not feel well either physically or emotionally. He does not believe he can protect anyone since he could not protect himself from the shooting. He avoided taking pain pills, and while the ones for depression and anxiety helped in the beginning, he stopped taking them. Downward spirals are common in his family, and he believes “there was only so far you could run from what was tattooed on your DNA” (59). He thinks of Lina, and he masturbates in the shower.
