Summary

Chapter 1 is told from Nash’s perspective. Federal agents are in his office talking about Duncan Hugo and how they know Nash, a police officer, wants to find him. Nash was shot in the previous book in the series, and the agents believe they have enough to convict Anthony Hugo, a crime boss. The special agents do not want the local people to get involved and mess up the operation. Nash thinks about how he is just going through the motions. He feels like the shell of a man who does not even have the motivation to try to find Hugo. Naomi, Nash’s brother’s fiancée, and her niece, Waylay, were hurt the night he was shot, and he believes that a part of him died that night.
