Summary
In “Endangered Species,” Carlisle feels disoriented when she lands in New York. Her mind is caught between reality and memory. While wandering the city, she wonders what she wants “to happen here” (213). She cannot help but feel bitter over Robert’s and James’s absence throughout the years. She tries distracting herself thinking about Firebird, but cannot figure out how to enter the project. She starts reading about Boxhill and LaGrange Ballet instead. Interviews with Robert remind her of the man she knew and loved. Suddenly she feels incapable of seeing or forgiving him. She feels frustrated that she has not grown up at her age (219).
