Summary
In “Shifty,” unsure what to do “about going to New York,” Carlisle talks to Isabel on the phone (51). Although Isabel offers to accompany her to New York, Carlisle says she will be okay. She cannot imagine Isabel at Robert’s deathbed. The last time they “were all together” was for Carlisle’s college graduation (53). Carlisle felt she was “hosting two separate families” (53). Although Isabel knows Carlisle and Robert grew apart, she does not know why and does not ask questions. Carlisle says she and Robert need “to forgive each other and say goodbye” (54). Isabel says she wanted Robert to let go of his grudge years ago. Carlisle is upset about the situation because although she hurt Robert and James, her mistake was forgivable (55).
