Summary
The novel is narrated in first-person present by the main character, Jill. In the prologue, Jill waxes poetic on the nature of life and death via the murder of her former best friend, Shaila Arnold, who was killed by her boyfriend, Graham, at 15. Ever since Shaila’s murder, Jill has felt angry.
In Chapter One, Jill gets ready for the first day of senior year. Her best friend, Nikki, picks her up and drives her to Gold Coast Prep, where they are finally top of the food chain. Nikki and Jill had both been best friends with Shaila, and had often clashed because of their rivalry, but after the murder they became incredibly close. At the exclusive prep school, there is a secret society called “The Players” that haze one another and have access to perks like answer keys to tests...
