George Takei
George is the author and main character of They Called Us Enemy. The plot of the graphic memoir traces George's experience living in Japanese internment camps throughout his childhood with his parents and siblings, Henry and Nancy. When World War II ended, the Takeis moved back to Los Angeles, and as George grew up, he was taught the importance of being an active participant in American democracy by his father, Takekuma. He attended UCLA, where he studied theater, and had the opportunity to star in a significant play called Fly, Blackbird! He met Martin Luther King Jr. and marched in Civil Rights demonstrations. Later, George was cast in small roles in television and film before getting his big break starring as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu in the Star Trek TV series.
