Summary
Part 2 opens with an image of Andrea Donahue, the herald who calls Mateo. The reader learns that she is one of Death-Cast’s top representatives, but has been under inspection for rushing her calls. Despite that, she prides herself on how well she does her job, reminding herself “how lucky these Deckers are to have her,” as she “gives them a chance to really live” (84).
It is now 3:31 a.m. and Rufus is on his way to Mateo’s house. Malcolm and Tagoe are on their way to the police station, as they got themselves arrested in order to turn their attention away from Rufus. Mateo leaves notes for his neighbors and goes outside with Rufus. Careful to avoid the elevator, Mateo questions Rufus about all the possible risks of being outside.
