Juliette
Juliette represents the clash between Eastern and Western ideals. Throughout the novel, Juliette has two sides to herself. One half embodies the Western culture she grew up with during her time studying in the states. The other side wants to fit back into Shanghai which she frequently calls her city. Due to this, Juliette showcases the theme of finding one’s cultural identity.
