Shanghai
Shanghai is the city where the novel takes place. It is described as the center between Western Culture and Eastern history. The city is divided between the Scarlet Gang and the White flowers. However, it is also filled with foreigners from all across the world. This includes the Communists who try to stage a worker’s revolt in the city. The narrator clearly feels that Shanghai is devolving into chaos.
The Bund
The Bund is a factory district that resides along the Huangpu River. This is where the novel starts as well as where Juliette and Roma confront the monster and Paul. Kathleen also goes to the Bund on two separate occasions searching for information. It is later revealed that the Huangpu River is where the monster must go to release the insects into the city.
