Summary
In "How to Practice," when Patchett's childhood friend Tavia's father Kent died, Patchett helped Tavia sort through his belongings. Kent was an eccentric man who retained everything over the years. As a child, Patchett had been fascinated by his home and possessions. Going through his belongings after his death, made Patchett and Tavia realize they could "not do this to anyone" when they died (61).
Afterwards, Patchett talked to Karl about their home. They had planned to move, but Patchett wondered if they should "just pretend to move" instead (62). They began sorting through their belongings. While going through each room, Patchett realized she had a sentimental attachment to everything she owned. Throughout the process, she learned how to let go of what she did not need.
