Summary
Chapter 3 is titled “Always Go Left.” In the first part of the chapter, the author writes about how attached she is to her car as a teenager, one that she inherited from Lile and which he taught her to drive. One night, she and a group of friends, including her almost-boyfriend Brian, stop off at a convenience store on their way to an amusement park. She comments on how bad Brian is at hiding the fact that he loves her, and how she feels unready to become physical or sexual with him. After their other friends are ready to leave, the author says, she is in a hurry to catch up with them because she has a bad sense of direction. She turns left into an intersection without looking, and is hit on the driver’s side by an ambulance.
