Summary
Chapters 40 through 42 cover Day 4 after the storm. As Chapter 40 begins, the keeper banged on the door to wake Frankie and Stotts. All of the ape caretakers gathered outside, away from the apes. They all wondered why no help had come. The keeper said that the reason did not matter. Everyone had run out of supplies, and the apes were getting dehydrated, so they would have to release them. Everyone else objected, but the keeper asked when anyone last saw their apes urinate. None of them could answer. Rita said help would come in a day or two. The keeper responded that dehydration happens fast, starting with the juveniles. They would have to release the apes and lead them to water while they were still strong enough to move. She asked if anyone else had a better idea, but no one did.
