Summary
Chapter 38 covers Day 2 after the storm. Frankie woke to see that Stotts had already put away his mattress, as if he had never been there. She found him outside and wished she could live in the “shimmering space” in his eyes (4064). He said that rescuers would probably come today. As they prepped mashed potatoes and sat together, the space between them felt different.
Frankie was glad she could once again feel the way she had about her professor. Silently, she compared her renewed desire to the return of hunger for food. Both were signs that she was getting healthy. Once help arrived and Stotts’ family returned from England, she and he would be separated, and she would be able to move on.
With no help in sight, Stotts decided to hike down the road to a nearby farmhouse for supplies. He returned with soda...
