Summary

In Chapter 28, Lauren gets a text from Bohai after he disappears in the attic. He is in a new life in Sydney. When Lauren’s new husband appears, she is surprised to see it is Michael. She texts Bohai, trying to understand what it means “that she’s married Michael in two different worlds” (207).

Lauren settles in with Michael and it feels “like a good life” (210). Then one day, she and Bohai meet up and discuss their current arrangements. Lauren admits that she is considering staying with Michael.

In Chapter 29, Lauren “feels herself warming and shifting into this better life” with Michael and decides to lock the attic door (215). However, not long later, she unlocks it again just in case. She “doesn’t love” Michael, but “wants to be better for him” (218).
