Summary

In Chapter 29, Landsman is dropped off near the treatment center in Peril Strait by the pilot. Landsman enters the treatment center and can see that it is merely an empty façade. He is attacked and knocked out by the two men present at the building. In Chapter 30, Landsman wakes up, still in the building, and is greeted by Heksel Shpilman’s lawyer, Baronshteyn. Landsman then thinks that the treatment center must have been used to lure the heroin-addicted Mendel out of hiding, but he does not know why Shpilman would want to lure his son, whom Heskel said was dead to him. Landsman also thinks that Shpilman’s cronies must have killed Naomi after she flew Mendel to the fake treatment center. In Chapter 31, Landsman is in a locked room in the treatment center, where Shpilman’s cronies are holding him prisoner...
