The Yellow House
The Yellow House is Sarah Broom's childhood home. It is located at 4121 Wilson Avenue in New Orleans East. The home was purchased and renovated by Sarah's mother and father in the early 1960s and it was home to the Broom family until Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Ivory always took care to keep the house well presented but it deteriorated severely after her husband Simon's death in 1980 and became a place that Ivory was ashamed to have seen by others. The Yellow House was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina and was subsequently torn down by the city. It is clear that Sarah and her family members all have a strong attachment to the house and to the land it sat on.
