Summary

VI: Lynette graduated high school and moved to New York as Sarah enters her teenage years. Sarah was bored by the monotony of school, and the frequency of her attendance decreased. Her mother tried to curb her rebellious spirit and enrolled her in a religious private school called Word of Faith Academy where she was one of only five black students.

VII: Ivory's growing shame over her home led Sarah to understand that no one outside the family was to enter the house. The family's shame was contrasted with their love of beautiful interiors and homemaking. Sarah made excuses to avoid her private school friends seeing where she lived.
