Summary
The Elder's first person narration continues as he walks through three different villages in search of the source of water the rats had to be living near before he finds a ravine filled with grass that should not have been alive at that point in time. He walks into the ravine, and at the end of it he finds a tiny spring; however, there is a yellow wolf with green eyes who camped by the spring waiting for prey to come to the water. The Elder and the wolf stare at each other, each of them not moving. The Elder grips the pole he carried with him to haul water buckets and after a long while, the wolf leaves the ravine. The Elder rests himself and baths in the spring, filling up his buckets before turning to leave the ravine.
