Winnie

Winnie is one of the protagonists. In half of the novel's chapters, the third person narrator follows her perspective and experiences. She is married to Nigel. Samuel is her only child. Winnie also several siblings, including her twin brother, Dakota. Winnie meets Nigel on a blind date, immediately surprised by how attracted she is to him. After they marry, she is convinced she can create the perfect life. However, Winnie struggles to have a baby. After six miscarriages, she feels desperate, longing for a child.

During these early years of her marriage, Winnie works as a social worker for Illuminations Mental Health. Though her intentions are good, she quickly makes a habit of becoming too involved in her patients' lives. This is especially true of her relationship with Josalyn.
