Water symbolizes the life force of Cross River: the river itself. The River provides a place of resurgence for the characters of the anthology, who turn to the water and riverside in times of struggle.
Fire
Fire symbolizes destructive tendencies and the living emptiness. Slim fantasizes about the burning of the Temple and when he sees it, he thinks of the fire's destruction as a work of Art. When Slim's living emptiness grows the largest it can, he sets the Wildlands on fire.
