Summary
In "The Fall" section entitled "Fall 2018," Scott begins the novella with Dr. Chambers being handcuffed by campus police at Freedman’s University (FU), where he teaches on Roland Hudson. One of the campus police officers tells Chambers he is a former student, and that Chambers was kind to him. The officers remind Chambers he is barred from being on campus.
The narrator introduces himself as Dr. Simeon Reece, former adjunct professor at FU who became homeless when he lost his teaching job. He now lives in the basement of the communications building, which was once a morgue, and teaches classes unofficially.
In “2,” an email dated September 2018 is included from the English department chair to Chambers which requests all the materials from Chamber’s class English 101: Special Topics: Loneliness, as Chambers is currently under review after...
