Structure
The memoir is divided into ten chapters. The main story line follows the life of Bridgett Davis, specifically in how she viewed her mother and in how their relationship was affected by the fact that Fannie ran a Numbers business. That main story line is not presented in chronological order at the beginning of the book. For example, Bridgett described a scene from grade school in which her teacher chastised her for having too many shoes. In Chapter 1, Bridgett described typical life in her home as a child, with Fannie taking care of the business and how that affected the household.
