Bridgett Davis
Bridgett is the author and narrator of the story. She was the youngest child of Fannie Drumwright Davis and John T. Davis. As the youngest, she had a different relationship with her parents than her siblings. She considered herself “daddy's girl” when she was young. When she was very young, she spent a lot of time with her father because Fannie was busy running a Numbers business, the sole support for the family. When John T. and Fannie's marriage reached the point that John T. slept on the couch, Bridgett often slept on his back, which is one sign of their close relationship. When her parents officially divorced, Bridgett lived with her mother but spent many weekends with her father. She felt bitterly guilty when John T. died, feeling she had not spent as much time with him in recent years as she should have.
