Summary
Chapter 10 opened with a photo of Fannie and Bridgett, taken in Detroit in 1990. Bridgett included a letter she had written to Fannie in 1989, thanking her for the $900 Fannie had sent. Bridgett thanked her mother for always being ready to help, and never making her feel guilty about asking. She said she had applied for a teaching job and felt it would be a good job with good benefits, though it would not begin for a few months. She said she hoped her mother was proud of her. She was 29. Within a week, Fannie was diagnosed with cancer. Bridgett knew Fannie was sick, but Fannie did not tell her that it was cancer until after Bridgett completed her interviews for the new job.
