Disagreement
The author uses the relationship between Anthony the character and Hawthorne to show how their personal disagreements taint their business relationship. Anthony’s only association with Hawthorne is that he is supposed to be his ghostwriter. He spends time with him to document information about the case and learn how Hawthorne goes about solving it. On several occasions, however, Anthony the character almost ends his business relationship with Hawthorne because he does not like his views even though he admits that Hawthorne is good at his job and helped improve the series he had served as a consultant on.
