Summary
In Chapter 17, Anthony meets Hawthorne to go to Canterbury. They take the train and during the ride Hawthorne reads a book. Anthony asks him about it and discovers that he is reading if for his book group. He asks Hawthorne more questions which causes him to tell Anthony that he should be thinking about the case. Anthony tells him that he believes Alan Godwin is the killer. He explains his theory. Hawthorne talks to him about it, but says that he disagrees and tells Anthony that everything is based on "the first thing" (364) Diana saw when she went to the funeral parlor. Anthony tires to remember the first thing she saw when she went "into" (365) the funeral parlor. He thinks, but cannot figure out what Hawthorne is talking about.
