Summary
In “At Caldwell Circle,” Brooks' mother tried to convince him not to marry Ruthie because her family was not wealthy enough. Brooks accused his mother of living in a different century. Martha Lee tried also to get her husband to talk Brooks out of marrying Ruthie, but he told her that he would not because there was nothing wrong with Ruthie or her family. She argued that Bud had a prosthetic arm and Peggy wore polyester pants and collected frog figurines.
In “Dot Weems,” set in 1986, Dot shared that Ruthie and Brooks had their first baby, Carolyn Lee.
In “Silver Spring, Maryland,” set in 1989, Peggy discovered she had a wattle under her chin. Bud knew he would be in trouble whether he agreed or disagreed. He distracted her by taking her out to dinner.
