Who needs an art scholarship when you've got a wedding ring?

Importance: Marthe is upset after losing out on an art scholarship that would have allowed her to study and live in Paris. She has always dreamed of leaving the chateau, and her artwork could allow her to do that. When she does not win, Henri, her lover and friend since childhood, tries to console her by minimizing the importance of the scholarship. Marthe takes offense and wonders why Henri would think that she prefers marriage over artwork and independence. This demonstrates that even though Henri knows Marthe better than anyone else, he is influenced by the stereotypical, acceptable roles of women in society. He is unable to understand that Marthe's work is driven by passion and purpose, and that it is not a hobby.
