Summary
Part 2, Section 1 explores the new relationships in two of the women’s life: Ania and Herr Carsten Kellerman and Benita and Herr Muller. Chapter Fourteen starts from Benita’s perspective with Benita, Marianne, and their children now living in a new apartment in Tollingen in May of 1950. The castle was too large and difficult to maintain, so Marianne had it boarded up. The two families get into a car to go to the Kellerman’s house for Ania and Carsten’s wedding. While Ania is thirty years younger than Carsten, it is a marriage of convenience as she knows it will protect her sons’ futures. At the reception, a young German man who had recently turned from a POW camp grabs Benita into a dance, telling her he knows her secret. She is worried until he accuses her falsely of being a lesbian...
