Summary

Part 1, Section 2 begins with Marianne’s perspective on July 20, 1944 in Weisslau, another home owned by Marianne. Marianne is in the midst of waiting to hear about her husband and Connie’s plan to murder Hitler. Marianne remembers learning about Lublin and the murder of Jewish women and children. For her, she was convinced that assassinating Hitler was the only way. Her husband however went back and forth on the plan, feeling strongly that the law should take care of Hitler rather than assassination. Finally, after learning of the concentration camps Albrecht agrees to the plan.

Marianne is nervous with anticipation on the day of the assassination. At one point, she sees a cat attack a crow and mangle it, while other crows looked on. Later that day, her cook announces the news from the radio, that Hitler has been injured but not killed...
