Summary
In Chapter 12, Magda and her husband Stefan talked about going to Mass. "Magda was Slovene and Stefan Hungarian" (51). They met shortly after receiving entry to the Commonwealth of Australia after the war. They soon married, and learned English.
In Chapter 13, at Goode's, while the women prepared for the rush, they discussed their Christmas plans. Later, Magda told the others she needed to borrow Lisa in Model Gowns. The others resented her.
In Chapter 14, Magda taught Lisa about Model Gowns. The dresses were all unique, designed so that no women would end up wearing the same thing. They were, however, very expensive. Magda showed her the books and frocks. Lisa was astounded. She had not known clothing could "be something beyond a more or less fashionable covering" (59). The Model Gowns were like art. Magda was pleased to be teaching Lisa.
