Summary

As Chapter 23 opens, Frankie lives with Ethel and Barb on Ethel’s farm. She tries to forget about Vietnam. Frankie receives a letter from her mother telling her that she is glad Frankie has her friends to support her during her difficult time. She admits that Connor was ashamed of Frankie’s service, and she thinks that he was actually ashamed of himself for not being able to serve. Public sentiment has turned against the war. Atrocities committed by Americans at My Lai are on the news, and journalists now report from the ground in Vietnam. The American people no longer just get their facts from the Nixon Administration.

Ethel plans to marry Noah. She is in veterinary school and is on the path to becoming a member of the PTA one day. Barb has become active with the Vietnam Veterans...
